Friends:

Thank you!

Last night would not have been possible without your help. We were outspent nearly 5-1 by outside groups in this race, which made a true boots-on-the-ground, grassroots effort all the more important. And what I believe at the end of the day made the difference was friends talking to friends, forwarding along emails, putting up signs, and a whole lot of hard work from volunteers and other conservative activists across the district.

Quite simply, this race was about people across the Lowcountry recognizing that this country cannot continue down the path it is on financially without some disastrous consequences, and it’s going to take people here and elsewhere working incredibly hard to make their voices heard if we’re going to indeed alter that trajectory.

So while the battle for this campaign is behind us, a larger and more significant battle is ahead with regard to the future of our nation…and you can bet I’ll be asking for your help on that front very soon!

I know I’ve asked a lot of you over the course of this campaign…and if I can trouble you for one more thing over the next few days, I would sure appreciate it if you happen to see any stray campaign signs out and about to grab them, and either bring them by the campaign office or let us know where we can come pick them up.

Aside from that, I would once again simply offer my profound thanks for your help. Take good care.

Mark

Charleston, SC – May 5, 2013 – Mark Sanford issued the following statement on his opponent’s appearance with Jim Clyburn today:

“It’s fascinating that my opponent on one hand claims to be an independent voice, yet on the other hand would campaign with one of the most fiscally liberal and partisan members of the current Congress,” Sanford said. “Clyburn and Pelosi have been on the same page with regard to every major policy decision, and there is increasingly little reason to believe there would be any difference between the way they vote, and the way my opponent would vote should she be elected.”

“Even today, my opponent failed to offer a single policy difference between herself and Congressman Clyburn or Nancy Pelosi. You can’t have your cake and eat it too in politics…claim independence on one hand, while on the other refuse to offer a single example of that supposed independence.

“And I suspect the reality is that my opponent would not, indeed, be independent. Nancy Pelosi and national Democrats have poured over $1 million into this race to get her elected. Past and present heads of the Democratic majority in the United States Senate, both Tom Daschle and Harry Reid, have contributed to my opponent. The total contributed from labor unions – including the very union that tried to shutter Boeing in South Carolina – nears $100,000. The bottom line is that my opponent has given voters zero reason to believe she would actually be anything other than a reliably liberal vote, and today’s appearance with Clyburn helps confirm it.”

Note: During her last appearance with Clyburn, Colbert Busch said nothing about being an “independent voice” and instead promised to be a voice for unions. Watch for yourself here:http://charleston.patch.com/articles/rep-clyburn-endorses-elizabeth-colbert-busch-for-sc1#video-13386926

Charleston, SC – May 1, 2013 – The Sanford for Congress campaign today released a new ad previewing its closing argument of the campaign – Governor Sanford’s record of fiscal conservatism, contrasted with the implications of putting another Nancy Pelosi ally, Elizabeth Colbert Busch, in office.

The new ad features Sanford speaking straight to camera, and begins airing today on broadcast and cable. It can be viewed here:

“We’ve talked a lot about how with the support my opponent is receiving from Nancy Pelosi and friends – to the tune of $1 million – that she’ll be anything but an independent voice in Washington,” Sanford said. “What that means in practical terms is a return to a Pelosi speakership, which brought us things like Obamacare, government stimulus, more debt, and more spending. When I talk to small business owners and taxpayers across our district, that’s something they’re incredibly concerned about. They worry about what implementing Obamacare will mean for their business; what government stimulus for some industries and not others does to their ability to compete; and what spending and debt are going to do the value of the dollar and the worth of their savings.”

Script below:

I’ve fought hard over the years to make South Carolina a better place to call home.

But those efforts pale now against the larger battle for the direction of our country.

Maybe that’s why Nancy Pelosi and allies have spent more than a million dollars to defeat me.

But this contest is bigger than them or me, it’s about two different visions of how we restore America and reign in Washington spending.

We have to get this right.

I’m Mark Sanford, I approved this message and humbly ask for your help and vote.

Charleston, SC – April 30, 2013 – The Sanford for Congress campaign today announced the endorsement of Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, a nationally recognized fiscal conservative.

Since his election in 2010, Paul has been an outspoken advocate for limited government and cutting spending. He has proven to be an outspoken champion for constitutional liberties and fiscal responsibility, and a fighter against government overreach. Among his first legislative proposals: cutting $500 billion in federal spending and a plan to balance the federal budget in just five years.

“More than anything, Washington needs strong and consistent voices for fiscal responsibility and liberty,” Paul said. “Mark has proven during his time in office that watching out for taxpayers and holding the line on spending are his top priorities. What we absolutely cannot afford is someone like his opponent, who will be yet another vote for a return to the Pelosi speakership, for disastrous programs like Obamacare, and for more spending and debt. I am pleased to endorse Mark and stand with him in this race.”

Sanford thanked Senator Paul for his endorsement.

“Rand has been an incredible advocate for both today’s and tomorrow’s taxpayers in the way he’s pushed for fiscal sustainability in Washington,” Sanford said. “It goes back to this larger idea of walking the walk, and governing in the same way you campaign. I think in looking at my own record, there’s been a consistent theme of looking out for taxpayers and the bottom line. And unfortunately, with respect to my opponent, it simply isn’t believable that she would be an independent voice given who has been funding her campaign.”

Charleston, SC – April 28, 2013 – Elizabeth Colbert Busch’s most recent fundraising report shows an incredible amount of support from ultra-liberal money funneling organization ActBlue, again raising questions about just how “independent” a voice she would be.

The organization is famous for funneling out of state donations to liberal candidates and PACs across the country. In addition to the DCCC and DSCC, ActBlue’s most popular recipients of campaign cash during 2012 were Massachusetts’ Elizabeth Warren, and the far-left Progressive Change Campaign Committee and the CREDO Super PAC.

Colbert Busch has tried to distance herself from her liberal ideology recently, something becoming increasingly difficult in the wake of Nancy Pelosi and her allies committing nearly $1 million to attacking Mark Sanford with misleading ads.

The FEC report showing ActBlue funneling $420,000 to Colbert Busch is yet another sign that she’ll be a reliable voice for Pelosi-backed policies like Obamacare, stimulus, and out of control spending.

“The more our district learns about Colbert Busch, the more it’s clear she would be anything but an independent voice,” Sanford said. “The fact that liberals from across the country have funneled $420,000 into her campaign from ActBlue should be incredibly disconcerting to the people of this district, given who some of their biggest recipients have been in the past.”

Charleston, SC – April 26, 2013 – Elizabeth Colbert Busch’s campaign is refusing to give straight answers on her liberal ideology that is completely out of step with the First Congressional District.

Nancy Pelosi is running her own campaign against Mark Sanford, as evidenced by an email sent this week by the House Majority PAC. Nancy Pelosi knows that Elizabeth Colbert Busch will be a reliable vote for her in Congress and that’s the farthest thing from being an “independent voice.” Pelosi and her allies have invested nearly $1 million in defeating Sanford.

But as to whether Colbert Busch would support a Pelosi speakership?

Her campaign isn’t saying whether she would support a Pelosi bid for another term as House minority leader. “If Elizabeth has the great honor serving the people of the 1st District … she will make a decision and vote for the person who best supports and represents the values of her district,” said James Smith, Colbert Busch’s spokesman.

Colbert Busch helped write the grant that secured $43 million in stimulus funding for the wind facility in Charleston, and draws a salary from the facility.

But on whether she supports the stimulus?

“Elizabeth was not in Congress when that measure passed, and she cannot go back in time to change what’s already happened,” Smith said. “Instead, she will work hard in the here-and-now to put our country’s fiscal house back in order, cut spending and create good jobs for the next generation.”

Colbert Busch has called for fiscal responsibility…but what that means is anyone’s guess:

On the debt ceiling, she has said that changes must be made to get the country’s fiscal house in order before the debt ceiling should be raised, but she has not specified what those changes should be.

“What we have here is a candidate who wants to be all things to all people, and given that, it’s no wonder she continues to hide from televised debates,” Sanford said. “We do know two things – that she refuses to answer tough questions, and Nancy Pelosi is heavily invested in her campaign. What that adds up to is someone who claims to be an independent voice, but in reality will be a reliable vote for the Pelosi agenda in Congress.”

…Why is Nancy Pelosi Running a Campaign on her Behalf?

Charleston, SC – April 25, 2013 – Colbert Busch continues to tell us she will be an independent voice in Congress, yet Nancy Pelosi is busy running her own campaign against Mark Sanford, as evidenced by an email sent yesterday by the House Majority PAC. Nancy Pelosi knows that Elizabeth Colbert Busch will be a reliable vote for her in Congress and that’s the farthest thing from being an “independent voice.”

The email encouraged supporters to not only give money toward the effort to elect Elizabeth Colbert Busch, but also encouraged liberal Pelosi supporters nationwide to call former Governor Mark Sanford’s cell phone.

The effort appears to be working based on the number of calls Sanford has received! Take a look for yourself here.

This is part of a continued effort by Pelosi to buy another vote for her return to the Speakership.

Already Pelosi and other DC allies have invested nearly $1 million dollars in the effort to defeat Sanford.

It again raises the question of what Nancy Pelosi is attempting to buy with her investment.

Just today news broke that representatives from the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare were traveling down to the Lowcountry from Washington DC to endorse Colbert Busch. What hasn’t been mentioned is that this Washington based group spent over $600,000 last cycle working to elect Democrats (Take a look here). Again, this group gives the appearance of being independent, like Colbert Busch, but in reality is a shill for the liberal movement.

“It is clear that Pelosi and Friends expect something in return for their extensive investment and their efforts to personally run a race against me,” Sanford said. ”Pelosi is on record saying that Boeing should not have opened here without the union’s consent. She supports policies like Obamacare and the stimulus. She wants to return to the Speakership. It is clear that she believes Elizabeth Colbert-Busch will support her in these efforts to the point that she is raising money by attacking my candidacy, and urging others to join her.”

Charleston, SC – April 25, 2013 – Why is Nancy Pelosi running a campaign against Mark Sanford?

And why would we allow her to win given her belief Boeing should be shut down and given her beliefs are so contrary to those of people here along the coast of South Carolina?

Take a look for yourself: http://youtu.be/qfBgaXmvrno

Given she holds a stand that would shut down Boeing and has supported NLRB’s decision to do so, Sanford today called on Elizabeth Colbert Busch to return “every dime” of the money Pelosi spent on her behalf in the 1st Congressional District, from PAC’s and Pelosi-affiliated groups.

Colbert Busch has taken nearly $30,000 from unions, including $5,000 from the very same union that sought to shutter Boeing in South Carolina, while Nancy Pelosi and her allies in total have dedicated nearly $1 million toward boosting Colbert Busch’s Congressional bid.

With Elizabeth Colbert Busch refusing to participate in any televised debates, former Governor Mark Sanford continued to highlight his opponent’s ties to Nancy Pelosi, and how out of step Pelosi and other national Democrats’ views are with mainstream voters in the 1st Congressional District.

Governor Sanford showcased two clips today, one of Elizabeth Colbert Busch saying that she would be the unions’ “voice” in Congress. The second an interview with Nancy Pelosi saying that Boeing shouldn’t be allowed to operate in South Carolina if the union doesn’t agree to it.

“Nancy Pelosi believes she can buy another vote for her return to the Speakership, but I don’t believe at the end of it all that voters here are going to be swayed by her negative and misleading television ads,” Sanford said. “The fact is that whether it’s Obamacare, the stimulus, the debt ceiling or any number of other issues, my opponent and Nancy Pelosi’s views are completely at odds with what the people of the First District want. We have one more day left in our 15 in 5 tour, and I hope my opponent can carve time at least for one stop over the next 48 hours to discuss these issues face to face.”

Charleston, SC – April 24, 2013 – Former Governor Mark Sanford today stood at the site of what would have been the first debate between himself and his opponent, until Elizabeth Colbert Busch refused to participate, to instead “debate” her biggest benefactor, Nancy Pelosi.
“My opponent continues to run a stealth campaign, avoiding public appearances and refusing to commit to televised forums for the benefit of 1st district voters,” said Sanford. “Since Elizabeth Colbert Busch refuses to articulate her views publicly, we are left to draw inferences for what she stands for on the basis of the groups that have made substantial monetary investments on her behalf.”

“Nancy Pelosi and other national Democrats have contributed nearly $1 million to her effort and we know what Nancy Pelosi stands for – she is anti-Boeing, pro-stimulus, pro-Obamacare and supports raising the debt ceiling ,” Sanford said. “But because my opponent is refusing joint appearances to answer questions about where she stands on the issues, all we can assume is that she is going to be a reliable vote for the Pelosi-Obama agenda, were she to be elected.”

“Elizabeth Colbert Busch says she will be an ‘independent voice’ in Congress, if that is the case, why are Nancy Pelosi and liberal national Democrats contributing nearly $1 million to her effort? Would they be trying to buy this race to send an ‘independent’ voice to Congress, or a reliable liberal Democrat? What are they expecting in terms of their return on investment? Would my opponent indeed cast her vote in favor of a return to the Pelosi speakership? These are questions for which she owes answers directly to the people of the 1st District.”

Beaufort County, SC – April 23, 2013 – Former Governor Mark Sanford today continued his 15 in 5 tour, calling on his opponent to directly address her union ties and the national Democratic party’s attempts to buy this race.

Colbert Busch is on tape promising union members that she would be their “voice” in Washington, a revelation highlighted in an ad released today by the Sanford campaign that can be watched here: http://youtu.be/549fQMhDg-4

Additionally, within the last week Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee invested nearly $1 million in Elizabeth Colbert Busch’s campaign.

Colbert Busch has received nearly $30,000 in labor union contributions, including $5,000 from the very union that tried to shutter Boeing in South Carolina. Sanford has called on his opponent to return that money, which she has refused to do. In addition, she is refusing to jointly address issues alongside Governor Sanford, save for one debate.

“How can one claim to be an independent voice when you are on camera promising to be a voice for big labor and you continue to dodge debates, while allowing national Democratic groups to invest nearly $1 million in your campaign?” asked Sanford.

“My opponent has some real questions to answer in terms of whose ‘voice’ she would be in Congress – that of the labor unions and Nancy Pelosi, or that of job creators like Boeing and the taxpayers,” Sanford said. “Throughout my time in office, I have consistently been on the side of job creators, entrepreneurs, and taxpayers. My record speaks to that. It’s unfortunate that my opponent continues to hide behind a million dollar ad barrage from DC Democrats rather than coming out to face voters directly.”
